How To Replace A Broken Radio Antenna

You cannot use an antenna forever because it can wear out or break. So you have to fix it if you still need one for your car radio. Removing the device is simple when you use the right tools.

If your car’s radio has no antenna but a factory antenna hole, you should put the antenna cable through it.

The antenna is mainly removed when broken, not working or if the drive is poor, and you can solve such issues by replacing the whole assembly of the antenna. 

If it is broken, you can solve this by replacing the mast instead of the entire assembly.

Identify Your Type of Antenna

This is the first step because various antennas are made up of cables or wires. The three common ones are internal, external, and satellite antennas.

When internal ones are set in your car, they receive better and are protected from weather and accidental damage. Installing it improves the performance of your car’s radio, and its removal will also affect reception. 

External antennas located around the car’s hood offer better reception than internal ones. But they are prone to weather damage or breakage.

Remove the Rubber Grommet

This seal prevents water, dirt, and debris from the antenna. In addition, it protects the antenna hole from damage due to tearing or fraying. Removing the rubber can be tricky, and if it is removed incorrectly, it can damage the antenna.

Firstly, you should reach the rubber itself, but it would be hard to access it in a drive or below the car’s hood.

Before removing it, clean around the antenna to protect the car’s surface. For cleaning purposes, use a clean piece of cloth. Also, use an appropriate tool to take off the rubber grommet from around the lip of your car’s radio antenna.

Remove the Antenna Screws

When removing the rubber grommet is complete, you have to undo the screws; therefore, you should get a screwdriver.

Remember to lift off the mount from your car when using the screwdriver. 

You should take off the screws because they are used to the antenna. To undo the nuts on the mast’s base, you can use pliers, a wrench, or a screwdriver. Keep the nuts safely because you can use them later.

Screws are generally tight on the antenna’s mount, and after loosening them, lift the mount from your car and check under the dashboard. By doing this, you will find out the correct location where the antenna is installed.

Remove the Sockets

Do away with the sockets after removing the nut. The socket holds your car’s antenna to the frame. You can easily do this by using a crescent wrench.
