I recently had the pleasure of testing this fantastic subwoofer and was absolutely blown away by its impressive performance.

Not only it offers deep, robust bass that can fill any car with a satisfying sound, but it is also a reliable and durable piece of tech that you won’t have to worry about breaking or needing repairs in a hurry.

Tip: This sub is not designed as free air, so you need an excellent enclosure to experience its full potential.

For softer and more precise bass, I recommend a sealed box, and for more boomy with a lower end, go for a vented one.

Many good boxes are available on Amazon, so if you are interested, check them out.

In the article below, I will detail my experience with the Rockford Fosgate Punch P3SD2-12 review, so you can see what I think and make an informed decision as to whether it would be the right choice for your car audio system.

The Rockford Fosgate P3SD2-12 Punch shallow-mounted car subwoofer (link to Amazon) is designed to deliver high-performance bass in a smaller package.

It features a sleek and low-profile design, with a frame that houses the subwoofer and excellent venting to prevent overheating and thermal breakdown.

At just 3-11/16 inches deep, this subwoofer will fit into places where no bass has gone before, making it perfect for those with limited space, although it is not as narrow as Rockford Fosgate T1S1-12 (link to Amazon), for which I did a separate review.

The anodized aluminum cone and dust cap make the woofer light and easy to drive yet rigid enough to maintain its shape even when turned up loud. This design makes it perfect for pick-up truck owners wanting to feel a nice punch toward the seats.

The M-Roll Santoprene™ surround provides excellent excursion for maximum output while being durable enough to last.

The dual 2-ohm voice coils allow you to wire up multiple subs or to coax an optimum performance from your amplifier.

The power range is 50-400 watts RMS (200 watts per voice coil), and it can handle a peak power of 800 watts.

The frequency response is 34-250 Hz, and the sensitivity is 85 dB, which means you need a strong amplifier to make it loud.

The P3SD2-12 comes with a 12″ shallow-mount subwoofer with dual 2-ohm voice coils, an anodized aluminum cone with M-Roll Santoprene™ surround, and a top-mount depth of 3-11/16 inches.

The sealed box volume is 0.60-1.20 cubic feet, and the ported box volume is 1.25 cubic feet. I would not try to go for a lower volume, especially in the sealed box.

I know there are some excellent enclosures with 0.4 cubic feet or below if you really need a small, but this sub will not play well in smaller-than-recommended volume boxes.

If you do not have a room even for 0.6 cubic feet, look for a different sub, or make a customized enclosure.

If you want to try a customized box to match the shape of your interior, I recommend checking CarAudioFabrication, and I am sure Mark will be happy to make a unique design for your needs.

Ease of Use

The P3SD2-12 is very easy to install, you can build a custom enclosure or find a suitable box, and it is compatible with most vehicles.

It has standard spring-loaded terminals, so its connection to the amplifier is straightforward without worrying about the wires can become loose over time.

Personal Experience

I have personally used the Rockford Fosgate P3SD2-12 Punch shallow-mounted car subwoofer, and I am impressed.

We had it installed in a sealed box under the back seat in a friend’s F150, and it’s a perfect range of high and low bases.

It is powerful enough to make this truck shake a bit, yet it does not take up much space. I had it connected in parallel to a small Kicker 47KEY500.1 at 1ohm (link to Amazon), and I was not disappointed.

A few years back, when I started researching shallow-mount subs, I was a bit skeptical of a narrow design, but with drivers like P3SD2-12, I could not be happier. They simply sound amazing.

  • It can be prone to damage if not installed properly

Overall, the Rockford Fosgate P3SD2-12 Punch shallow-mounted car subwoofer is an excellent option for those looking for high-performance bass in a smaller package.

With its advanced materials and engineering, low-profile design, dual 2-ohm voice coils, and user-friendly features, this subwoofer is perfect for those with limited space, such as pick-up truck owners, but not only.

The M-Roll Santoprene™ surround provides excellent excursion for maximum output while being durable enough to last.

Rockford Fosgate P3SD4-12 Punch P3S 12" 4-Ohm DVC Shallow Subwoofer

I had a wonderful personal experience with it. It is perfect for those who want impressive low-end in smaller or hard-to-fit vehicles. However, it may not have as much low end as regular P312 and needs to be placed in a recommended box size to avoid damage.

I highly recommend this subwoofer to anyone looking for a powerful and high-performance shallow mount subwoofer. It is definitely worth the investment and is less expensive than similar ones, yet not as powerful ones.

How Do I Install the Rockford Fosgate P3SD2-12?

You can install the subwoofer by building a custom enclosure or finding a suitable box that fits your vehicle.

Check the top-mount depth of 3-11/16 inches and the sealed or ported box volume requirements before purchasing a box. Then, connect the subwoofer to an amplifier and adjust the settings to your liking.

Why Is My Subwoofer Not Producing Any Sound?

There could be a few reasons your subwoofer is not producing any sound.

#1. First, check to make sure all connections are secure and properly connected.

#2. Also, ensure that the amplifier is turned on and set to the correct input. Make sure that the volume on the amplifier and head unit are not turned down too low.

How Do I Wire the Dual 2-Ohm Voice Coils of the Subwoofer?

The dual 2-ohm voice coils can be wired differently to achieve different impedance levels.

For example, wiring the coils in parallel will result in a 1-ohm impedance, while wiring the coils in series will result in a 4-ohm impedance.

Consult the subwoofer’s manual for specific wiring instructions and match the connection type with the amplifier.

Why Is My Subwoofer Producing a Distorted Sound?

Several factors can cause a distorted sound. One of the most common causes is overdriving the subwoofer, meaning the amplifier sends too much power to the subwoofer.

To fix this, turn down the amplifier’s gain or volume. Additionally, the subwoofer may be wired incorrectly, so check the wiring and look mainly at the correct polarity of both coils.

How Do I Avoid Damaging the Subwoofer?

To avoid damaging the subwoofer, make sure not to play the subwoofer at high volumes for extended periods of time.

Also, be sure not to place the speakers too close to the back seat, as this can cause the subwoofer to fall apart. Leave a bit of space for the cone’s movements.

Additionally, ensure that the subwoofer is installed correctly and in a suitable enclosure to prevent overheating and thermal breakdown.
